WordPress.com: It’s Not Really Free

While a basic WordPress.com blog at yourname.wordpress.com is free, if you need more features, they charge extra! The following functionality is charged as a WordPress.com premium upgrade – the true cost of a FREE WordPress.com blog / website account:

  1. Domain Name Mapping & Registration: Remove ‘wordpress’ from your URL and use your own domain. Note: you still have NO FTP access to your files or ability to add 3rd party themes, plugins or code. Cost $13.00 – $25 per domain p.a.
  2. Custom Design Font + CSS Editor: Lets you customize fonts + stylesheets, but not edit PHP or template files. Cost $30.00 p.a.
  3. No-Ads: Remove WordPress adverts from your blog. You are still not permitted to add your own ads e.g. AdSense, affiliate links, sponsored / paid posts or any kind of prohibited code. Cost $30.00 per annum.
  4. Video Upload: Embed video in your blog posts and pages. You may need a space upgrade too! Cost $60.00 per annum.
  5. Space: Increase from 3GB to 10GB, 25GB, 50GB, 100GB, 200GB + add ability to upload audio / music. Cost $20 – $290 p.a.
  6. Bundles: A combination of upgrades 1 – 5 above at a discounted price. Cost from $99 p.a. depending on space required.
  7. Premium Themes: Add options for site customization + a limited selection of premium themes. Note: You are still not permitted to upload your own or 3rd party premium themes or plugins. One-time cost typically $50 per theme.
  8. Site Redirect: Have WordPress.com redirect yourblogname.wordpress.com pages & posts to a new domain. Cost $13.00 p.a.
  9. Guided Transfer: Have WordPress.com move your blog permanently to your self-hosted website. Cost $129.00 per transfer.

By now it should be obvious that, unless you are happy with no ‘bells and whistles’ and for ads for other websites and services to appear alongside your own content, a WordPress.com blog / website is NOT FREE. More important: if you want to brand your blog and use your own domain name (why wouldn’t you?), add extra functionality and use a premium theme, it’s going to cost you!

In fact, a self-hosted WordPress website with a $50 premium theme on a $9.99 per month hosting plan that you own and control 100%, will cost you less in year 1 than a WordPress.com blog with a $99 upgrade bundle & $50 premium theme! So if you are serious about your business and your business website, WordPress.com may not the best choice for several reasons, not least price!

If the thought of getting your own hosting and setting up your own WordPress website using your own domain name is daunting – don’t worry! We offer either a free WordPress set-up service when you purchase hosting through our affiliate links (they pay us a commission to cover our costs), or a low-cost paid WordPress set-up service if you already have your own hosting and want to use a premium domain and theme.

The following Q&A aims to answer your most common questions. Simply click each question below to view the answer. If you still have questions please do not hesitate to contact us. For example if you seek custom website design and development, our parent company 1LG.com has been offering custom web development since Year 2000.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_toggle title=”Why WordPress?” icon=”0″ icon_closed=”0″ el_id=”1456472141281-52d49329-6b90″]WordPress is the world’s most popular website blog CMS software with over 60 million WordPress websites online today. The #1 status and popularity of WordPress is due to its ease of use, flexibility, and is free to download. Not just used for blogs, WordPress is a very powerful website publishing platform many thousands of themes and plugins available to download capable of running a large business website, online shop or web application with cutting edge features and functionality that can be used on any device from a mobile phone upwards.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Which WordPress?” icon=”0″ icon_closed=”0″ el_id=”1456472532755-f0e2d24f-bffb”]We set up WordPress.org software on your ‘self-hosted’ server. This is different to WordPress.com which is a network hosted account where your site is simply part of their network. Blogger.com and Facebook.com accounts are similar in that respect; they own the content not you. A WordPress.com account is more for hobbyists as they also restrict your use of themes, plugins and your ability to customise your site or use it to make money. You are also bound by their terms as to the content you can publish e.g. no advertising or affiliate links are allowed (they add their own ads to your site unless you pay for ‘no ads’) and if you violate their terms your site can be terminated without warning. If you want a serious or business website you need a self-hosted WordPress website like the ones we set up for free.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”My WordPress?” icon=”0″ icon_closed=”0″ el_id=”1456472623887-a917cb26-7f20″]WordPress.org makes the same software used WordPress.com freely available for anyone to download and used on their own hosting without any restriction as to use. While the software can be set up as a multisite network exactly like WordPress.com with limitations imposed by the network owner, that is NOT what we offer. We offer our customers a completely autonomous WordPress website on your own hosting account, that’s 100% yours to do with as you wish.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Hosting WordPress?” icon=”0″ icon_closed=”0″ el_id=”1456472666744-61b5dce3-07ef”]With thousands of self-proclaimed best web hosting services it can be difficult to choose the best host for your needs, especially if this is your first website. Because web hosting is one of the key factors that can make or break a website, you need someone you can rely on to help you make the right hosting decision. Having been involved in IT since the 1980’s and actively designing, developing and hosting client websites since before Year 2000, we believe we are well qualified to guide you in this very important choice.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Hosting Cost?” icon=”0″ icon_closed=”0″ el_id=”1456472745575-726acf20-7e78″]Hosting prices are subject to change. For the most up-to-date hosting prices, enter your name, choose a domain and you will see all the different pricing options for the hosting accounts and extras. Packages tend to vary from around $9.95 to $24.95 per month depending on which plan you choose and whether you prepay your hosting. You’ll get a bigger discount when you pay annually rather than monthly but very often your first 30 days are free with a monthly package, making it an easier decision to try it out.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Signing Up?” icon=”0″ icon_closed=”0″ el_id=”1456472871074-461814c3-6920″]Simply sign-up for a hosting account with any one of the hosting providers linked to here. If there are any money-off coupons available they will be embedded in the link already. Do NOT use any external coupons or other links on any other websites as we would not get our commission and you would not then be qualified to take advantage of our ‘free WordPress set up’ offer.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”What’s included?” icon=”0″ icon_closed=”0″ el_id=”1456472918645-4626053f-7502″]Depending on the package you choose many partner webhosts allow you to host an unlimited number of websites on an unlimited number of domains on a single cPanel account, however our FREE WordPress set up offer is limited to one website per hosting account. We can set up more websites after the first one, for a small fee. Many webhosting partners offer Free Google Adwords credits. They all offer a 99.9% uptime guarantee and a 30-day money back guarantee. Reliable and professional email and phone customer support is available if at any time you have a problem with your website, often 24/7 depending on the package chosen.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Why Free?” icon=”0″ icon_closed=”0″ el_id=”1456473051757-a804787f-6b8a”]You may be wondering why we offer to set up your WordPress website for free. To enable us to keep our free WordPress set up business model viable and provide you with this service, we require users to sign-up for hosting with one of our partner webhosting companies. Partners are selected because they offer high quality hosting + superior customer service. This ensures you get quality web hosting (you’ll need it anyway) and we earn commission from our partners for referring new clients. Everybody wins! Our in-house team also offer paid services such as graphic design, website tweaking, modifications and even custom website design services to our client base. Occasionally we also recommend other products or services we are affiliated with to help you succeed online.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Already got hosting?” icon=”0″ icon_closed=”0″ el_id=”1456473110129-05c29b19-230f”]To use our free WordPress set up service you need to sign up for a new hosting account with one of our webhosting partners so we can make our commission. Also, our normal WordPress set up procedures may not be compatible with every webhost. If your webhost is compatible with WordPress we can set up your site on your current hosting account for a one-time installation fee.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Domain costs?” icon=”0″ icon_closed=”0″ el_id=”1456473161540-08eaf8af-3677″]Domain registration prices are subject to change. Currently if you buy a domain through our webhosting partners it costs $14.95. While you may find cheaper domain registration elsewhere, you’ll need to change the nameservers yourself before it will work with your new webhosting account. This may add 24-48 hours to the time it takes to set up your website while we wait for the nameservers to propagate.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Already got hosting?” icon=”0″ icon_closed=”0″ el_id=”1456473198423-85175a90-8a3e”]Yes. When signing up for hosting simply select the box that says something like ‘Use a domain I already own’ and it will skip the domain registration section of the form. Then when you email us your hosting purchase receipt details, simply tell us you are using a domain you already own and we will send you instructions on how and what to change your nameservers to. Note: nameserver changes can delay your site set up by 24-48 hours.[/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Any limitations?” icon=”0″ icon_closed=”0″ el_id=”1456473261072-536c1716-aefe”]With a WordPress.org self-hosted website you don’t have the same limitations as you would have with a WordPress.com site. Your website set up is normally completed within 24-48 hours (not guaranteed) but can take longer if you are using your own theme or an existing domain while we wait for your nameservers to change. You will be purchasing your domain name (unless you own a domain already) and your hosting package where your WordPress website files are stored with one of our webhosting partners. If you are ever unhappy with this hosting service you can cancel your hosting account at any time and take your WordPress website files with you.[/vc_toggle][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Why WordPress / Which WordPress

WordPress is the world’s favourite blog / website CMS

With over 60 million users world-wide, WordPress now powers nearly 25% of all websites on the internet today. Free and open-source, it’s the content management system software of choice for many of the world’s top internet marketers, from ‘mom & pop’ businesses to global industries, to build their online businesses, due to its flexibility, scaleability and ease of use. But this wasn’t the case around 10 years ago, when WordPress was mainly used as a blogging platform. Today, besides blogging, you can use WordPress to build and run powerful websites and web applications.

First, understand that WordPress, WordPress.org and WordPress.com are all referring to an application that builds websites – its called WordPress of course. WordPress is free and open-source.

If you’re new to WordPress, you might not realise that there are actually two versions of WordPress – WordPress.com and WordPress.org. Confusingly both are built on the same core WordPress software platform. WordPress.com however is a managed, shared hosting platform built on WordPress. It handles all updates, backups, and security for its users. WordPress.org is a self-hosted version of the same core WordPress software that you can download for free, and host on a server of your choice, providing total flexibility of what you can build with it.

So which WordPress version is best to host a large website or a simple blog?

While hobbyist bloggers will continue to predominate the WordPress.com platform, today, many businesses may find it rather restrictive as a business website or ecommerce store and are moving to the self-hosted WordPress.org version that has no such limitations.

Which WordPress version is best for you will therefore depend on whether you are using WordPress as a personal blog or a business website. Also, if you need a website that YOU OWN AND CONTROL 100%, you should choose WordPress.org rather than WordPress.com. It could also cost you a lot less!

Further information on the main differences between the WordPress.com blogging platform and self-hosted WordPress.org version recommended for business websites is provided below:

WordPress.com versus self-hosted WordPress.org

WordPress.com is free to use, making it the world’s most popular blogging platform, but has usage limitations, unless you pay extra.

Even then, you cannot monetise a WordPress.com blog. You cannot sell your own products, promote affiliate products or sell advertising on it. More importantly, THEY own YOUR content and THEY impose the rules.

If you breach WordPress.com Terms of Service they can & do delete your files from their server without warning. Here’s the clause: “[WordPress] may terminate your access to all or any part of the Website at any time, with or without cause, with or without notice, effective immediately.” Be warned!

WordPress.com blogs are hosted on their server network – a bit like the Facebook network model – making it a good choice for hobbyist bloggers, but not for a business website or one where you need total control.

WordPress.org software is also FREE and has many advantages for those who want to own and control their own website.

‘Self-hosted’ WordPress.org core software is the same great software as used at WordPress.com plus enhanced flexibility minus the limitations. You can choose from thousands of premium themes and plugins to improve appearance, functionality and user-experience.

With self-hosted WordPress you have 100% control over what you put on your website and how you use it. Your website and all its content belongs to YOU and you can customize it any way you wish. You can monetize it by selling your own products online, promote affiliate 3rd party products and services to earn referral commissions, or offer advertising space on your website.

While the WordPress.org software is free to download, you need to purchase a domain name and hosting to run it on i.e. “your own self-hosted WordPress website”.

You’ll need to install WordPress on your chosen hosting server – most offer “one-click” WordPress installation using a free “out-of-the-box” default theme. You can change your theme at any time and there are hundreds of free and premium themes to choose from. Similarly there are hundreds of WordPress plugins designed to extend the functionality available on your website.

Depending on the complexity of your theme and business requirements, at this stage you may wish to employ a professional to help you to configure your new theme and make your website look and work as you wish it to, especially if you plan to run an online store, directory or membership website for example.

We offer a low cost WordPress configuration service for anyone purchasing premium themes, plugins, or hosting via our referral links. This includes installing and setting up your choice of premum theme, with essential plugins, navigation menu, main pages, footer widgets, working contact form and even logo upload. Additional customdesign and development can also be undertaken via our parent company 1LG.com

WordPress.com: Why it’s not really FREE!

While a basic WordPress.com blog at yourname.wordpress.com free, they charge extra for the following premium upgraded functionality:

  1. Domain Mapping & Domain Registration: Remove ‘wordpress’ from your URL and use your own domain. Note: you still have NO FTP access to your files or ability to add 3rd party themes, plugins or non-permitted code e.g. JavaScript. Cost $13.00 – $25 per domain p.a.
  2. Custom Design Font + CSS Editor: Lets you customize fonts and stylesheets, but not edit core PHP or template files.
  5. Space Upgrade: Increase from 3GB to 10GB, 25GB, 50GB, 100GB, 200GB + add ability to upload audio / music. Cost $20 – $290 p.a.
  6. Bundles: A combination of upgrades 1 – 5 above at a discounted price. Cost from $99 p.a. depending on space required.
  7. Premium Themes: Add options for site customization and a limited number / selection of premium themes with author support. Note: You are still not permitted to upload your own or 3rd party premium themes or plugins. One-time cost typically $50 per theme.
  8. Site Redirect: If you decide to leave WordPress.com they will redirect yourblogname.wordpress.com pages & posts to your new domain. Cost $13.00 per annum.
  9. Guided Transfer: Have WordPress.com move your blog permanently to a self-hosted WordPress.org site. Cost $129.00 per transfer.

By now it should be obvious that WordPress.com is NOT FREE if you use your own domain, add extra functionality and use a premium theme.

In fact a self-hosted WordPress website with a premium theme on a $9.99 per month hosting plan that you own and control 100%, costs less in year 1 than WordPress.com with a $99 upgrade bundle & $50 premium theme!
